Hydrogen can be used as a clean fuel by utilizing the energy released during oxidation or combustion. This process produces electricity or heat, with water as the only byproduct. The electricity generated can power electric vehicles and supply energy to homes.
Hydrogen is widely used in chemical production, including the manufacture of ammonia and methanol. It also plays a key role in industrial processes such as the thermal treatment of metals. For example, it is used as an additive in bright annealing to give stainless steel a polished finish, and in hydrodesulfurization, where hydrogen is injected into crude oil to remove sulfur.
Liquid hydrogen, the lightest gas with a high exhaust velocity, is used as rocket fuel and plays a vital role in the aerospace industry. Although its storage is technically demanding and costly due to its low density and the need for extremely low temperatures, ongoing research toward decarbonization is expected to improve cost-efficiency in the future.
Some studies suggest that hydrogen’s antioxidant properties have potential health benefits and therapeutic uses, though further research is ongoing. Clinical trials have suggested possible effectiveness in reducing the side effects of anti-cancer drugs. It has also been reported to suppress lactic acid production in athletes, thereby enhancing physical performance. Hydrogen is now being explored as a treatment for conditions such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, shoulder stiffness, headaches, lower back pain, bronchitis, and cough-variant asthma.
Hydrogen can be used to store electricity by utilizing surplus power to electrolyze water. The resulting hydrogen can be stored without significant energy loss and later converted back into electricity via fuel cells, making it a promising option for large-scale, long-term energy storage.
